"...Shemini Atzeres falls the day after Succos, though it is a holiday unto itself, and was supposed to have been in the month of Cheshvan instead (it was moved up in time to after Succos, according to the Midrash, to save the Jewish people from having to come up to the Temple during the rainy season)."
