Most new moon weekends will find the very active observers at Cherry Springs State Park, taking advantage of their extremely dark skies.

2011 is a mundane year for us in the Eastern USA... unless an unexpected comet shows up. No eclipses, no lunar occultations of bright planets or stars, and all major annual meteor showers are mooned out by a bright moon, below:

March 15-28 Mercury at its best in the West after sunset
April 3 Saturn at opposition; also Saturn - Jupiter exactly 180 degrees apart in the sky. They will now start closing for a 2020 conjunction.
April 22 Lyrid Meteor Shower (Full moon April 18)
May 7 National Astronomy Day! TBA
May 1-24 Spectacular 4 planet grouping in the eastern dawn sky begins;
May 9-13 Venus - Jupiter - Mercury trio
May 19-23 Venus - Mars - Mercury trio, and
May 31 Waning crescent moon joins the 4 planet grouping
June 9 Saturn 1/4 degree from star Porrima in Virgo
August 12 Perseid Meteor Shower (Full moon August 13)
September 3 Mercury at its best in the AM eastern dawn sky
October 1 Autumn NAD; also Mars passes right through M-44 Beehive cluster
October 8 Draconid Meteor Shower outburst this year??? Check it out
October 21 Orionid Meteor Shower (LQ moon October 20)
October 28 Jupiter at opposition
November 17 Leonid Meteor Shower (LQ moon on November 18)
December 12/13 Geminid Meteor Shower (Full Moon December 10th)
December 25 Venus makes for a great Christmas "pseudo-star" in SW after sunset
December 26 Crescent moon close to Venus in SW sky after sunset
    2012 has to be better than this year!!!
